Les Espaces Intérieurs

Pencil and gold leaf on paper
Since her teenage years, Laetitia de Chocqueuse has been collecting images. These come from all kinds of sources: family albums, newspaper clippings, the internet, old books. While the artist is interested in the forms and aura of these images, it is their mystery that appeals to her above all else. What they retain and suggest guides us toward the realm of possibilities. Through her multifaceted work, Laetitia de Chocqueuse combines fragments and suggests new stories. Sometimes reminiscent of surrealist aesthetics, her paintings, which lie between figuration and abstraction, are the result of long and meticulous work, contrasting with the immediacy of the images used.
Upon discovering the Lyret Hotel, Laetitia de Chocqueuse became interested in the history of the establishment, emblematic of a century of tourism in Chamonix. She reflected on the function of the place and its structure, divided into 37 rooms. The number 37 corresponds to a geometric shape: a regular centered hexagon. This number also coincides with the 37 marbles in the game of Solitaire, which itself takes the form of a circle. This ancient game evokes a moment of isolation or even introspection, specific to the space of the room. Laetitia de Chocqueuse interprets these rooms as bubbles offering their occupants a moment apart.
Les Espaces Intérieurs
The drawing brings together the 37 fragments scattered throughout the hotel rooms. By observing it, each traveler can find the fragment specific to their room.
Against a backdrop of alpine landscape floats a centered regular hexagon, intertwining several spaces and temporalities. The triangles represent interior spaces, while the bubbles offer glimpses of scenes from life, past or recent, from here or elsewhere. This multitude of images echoes the passage of visitors to the hotel, what the spaces retain of them and their aura. In the center, across an alpine lake, the water and sky meet in infinity, as if space and time were merging.
